Knowledge Mosaic Inc. has long presented a shadowed face to the world. We’ve been around nearly seven years. With our database and current awareness products, we serve most of the largest law firms in the world, as well as major corporations, banks, investment banks, accounting firms, government agencies, and universities. But if you go to the home pages of our websites, if you read our news service publications, you will not learn much about us. We’ve chosen to let our products and our service speak for us. We have developed strong individual relationships with our customers, but are personally modest and have not been much about media self-aggrandizement.
Today, we step into the light. We are launching our Wired Mosaic weekly newsletter for our customers, to help you get to know our products and to help you get to know us. Knowledge Mosaic is a truly special, unique company. We want to open the door to our world a crack and give you the opportunity to visualize what it’s like to be a small company in the beautiful city of Seattle; a technology business wedged alongside train yards and fishing terminals; an incredibly nimble, athletic, perspicuous business taking on the giants of legal and financial publishing. For just a few minutes each week, we want to welcome you to our world.

Toward Greater Transparency: Modernizing the Securities and Exchange Commission's Disclosure System
The SEC's 21st-Century Disclosure Initiative was created in June 2008 to determine how to update the Commission's current disclosure system, improve transparency and increase accessibility. The Commission has already begun the process of changing the old EDGAR system over to their new platform, IDEA (short for Interactive Data Electronic Applications), which is offering filing information in an interactive format. Part of the task of the Disclosure Initiative is to determine the best ways to utilize the new technology in getting information to the public. The report details several of the options being considered, including electronic data tagging, multiple submission and dissemination options for disclosures (some of which the Commission has already laid the groundwork for in recent rules) and the creation of a data warehouse. While a bit dry, the report does provide a solid first look into the future of filing methods and disclosure formats. The new system certainly has the potential to be as revolutionary as EDGAR was in its day, and hopefully the SEC is ready to take advantage of its possibilities.

Meet the Control Key: Your New Best Friend
What’s the fastest way to peruse a list of filings? Say you’ve run a search on Securities Mosaic, and now you’re staring down a long list of results. For maximum speed and efficiency, we recommend tabbed browsing. Instead of opening or previewing each document separately, open multiple documents simultaneously by holding down the Ctrl key as you click on the filings. This allows you to download a dozen or more documents en masse. Then read the first document as the remaining ones finish downloading. A time-saver of revolutionary proportions.

Woody Guthrie: A Life
by Joe Klein
Whatever your opinion of Joe Klein as a political writer and commentator, you’ll be spellbound by his magisterial biography of one of our country’s most important musicians and cultural icons. Illuminating Guthrie’s genius and the tragedy of his fall, Klein is neither fawning nor condescending; he gets out of the way and allows his subject to shine.
